The University of Bayreuth is a research-oriented university with internationally competitive, interdisciplinary focus areas in research and teaching. The Faculty of Languages & Literatures, in conjunction with the "Africa Multiple" Cluster of Excellence, is currently seeking to appoint a
Full Professor of Media Studies with Reference to Africa
at pay grade W3 (minimum salary per month: 6,683 €) to commence on 1 October 2019. This is a permanent civil service position. Additional salary components will be negotiated separately.
Applicants need to have a distinguished track record at the intersections of media studies, cultural studies and African studies. The professorship complements existing research focuses in African studies and will play a central role in the intellectual agenda of the "Africa Multiple" Cluster of Excellence, which is designed to break new ground in theory and method in African studies.
We are seeking to recruit a scholar whose work is situated at the interdisciplinary crossings between media studies, Africa-related philologies and cultural studies from a humanities perspective. The focus should be on the exploration of entanglements between auditory, visual and digital media as well as on the reflection of the very mediality of culture. Since the position covers an interdisciplinary field, the disciplinary orientation of the applicant should be media studies and can also include neighbouring fields such as visual anthropology, cultural studies or philology with a media studies orientation - all from a media studies perspective.
Applicants should be visible through international publications, have a specialization in a humanities-based mediality research and should have experience in media studies teaching and research. Media studies research and publications on regional foci on Africa, research on mediality and individual media are essential. In addition, experience in third-party funding and working in international networks is required.
The professorship will be assigned to the section Media Studies and will cover the field of media studies with reference to Africa in research and teaching. Because of its interdisciplinary function, cooperation with other disciplines in the Faculty of Languages and Literatures (such as Romance Philology, English / American Studies, African Studies) is indispensable and highly desirable with other disciplines within the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences. The professorship contributes to interdisciplinary collaborative research projects and actively participates in the further development of the research agenda of the Cluster of Excellence "Africa Multiple". Applications from candidates who have acquired part of their academic qualifications in Africa are welcome.
The successful candidate will teach courses in the bachelor's and master's programmes relating to media studies and to African studies and in the Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies. Willingness to procure external funding and to be actively involved in the bodies of academic self-administration is expected.
Prerequisites for this position (according to BayHSchPG Article 7 and Article 10 para 3) are a university degree, a doctoral degree, proven excellence in teaching, and a post-doctoral qualification to teach at a professorial level (Habilitation). Alternatively, evidence of equivalent scholarly achievement (for example as a junior professor, or in a non-university environment) will also be considered. A further requisite is the ability to teach in English. The successful candidate is expected to acquire a working knowledge of German within three years. Only applicants who are 51 years of age or younger can be hired as civil servants (Article 10 para 3 BayHSchPG).
The University of Bayreuth seeks to increase the proportion of women involved in research and teaching (in accordance with Article 4 para 2 sentence 1 BayHSchPG) and therefore particularly welcomes female applicants. All qualifications being equal, severely disabled applicants will be given priority. The University of Bayreuth strives to further increase the diversity of its academic staff. For this reason, scholars who can help make the research and teaching profile of the university more diverse are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants with children are highly welcome. The University of Bayreuth is a member of the best practice club Family at University, and it offers "dual career support" for career-oriented partners of highly qualified employees. In addition, an extended audit conducted by the German Rectors' Conference (HRK) returned a favourable review for the University of Bayreuth's commitment to internationalization.
