Full Professorship (W3) in Artificial Intelligence for Integrated Materials Science
Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) is one of Germany’s leading research universities, addressing the whole range of academic disciplines. A highly dynamic setting enables researchers and students to work across the traditional boundaries of academic subjects and faculties. To create knowledge networks within and beyond the university is RUB’s declared aim
FULL PROFESSOR (W3) IN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE FOR INTEGRATED MATERIALS SCIENCE
The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of Ruhr-Universität Bochum invites applications for the tenured faculty position of a Full Professor (W3) in Artificial Intelligence for integrated Materials Science to start as soon as possible.
The new professor will advance machine learning and data science for integrating experimental and numerical data towards the discovery and design of novel materials. Domain knowledge from materials theory will help to device specific modelling strategies based on data-driven experiments and simulations. Research includes data and expertise from all length scales relevant for materials, for example, in hierarchical and homogenization approaches. In particular iterative materials design, which initiates targeted experiments and simulations, and ultimately leads to autonomous materials discovery and development, are part of the research portfolio.
Deep integration with the research at ICAMS (www.icams.rub.de), ZGH (www.zgh.rub.de) and IM (www.iw.rub.de) is important. Close collaboration with groups in the Materials Research Department (www.mrd.rub.de), the Faculty for Mechanical Engineering (www.mb.rub.de) and the Faculty for Physics and Astronomy (www.physik.rub.de) are expected. Applicants must be internationally renowned experts in a relevant field of materials science and combine this with an excellent expertise in data science. The successful candidate will contribute to teaching in our Materials Science (Bachelor) and Materials Science and Simulation (Master) courses, and in the departments for mechanical engineering and physics and astronomy. Teaching can be done in English initially.
A positive evaluation as a junior professor or an equivalent academic achievement (e.g. habilitation) and evidence of teaching skills are required. The willingness to perform administrative duties at the faculty and at the university level is assumed. The appointment requirements according to § 36 ff. Higher Education Act NW must be fulfilled, further information is available at www.rub.de/appointments.
At RUB, we are committed to promote the careers of women and people of color in the areas in which they are underrepresented. We therefore encourage and welcome relevant applications as well as those from non-binary or gender-queer applicants. Applications from persons with disabilities or equal status are very welcome. Ruhr-Universität Bochum is an equal opportunities employer.
Applications should include a detailed Curriculum Vitae (with information on honors and awards, invited lectures, current and past third-party funding, teaching and supervision, academic and professional service), a list of all publications, a list and the PDFs of the five most important publications with a short description how each publication relates to the professorship and your planned research, certificates of academic degrees, a two-page outline of the general research interests, a one-page teaching concept, as well as a three-page research plan and the envisaged connections with ICAMS, ZGH, the Institute for Materials, the Materials Research Department, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy covering the next five years.
The applications should be sent via email to Prof. Dr. Alexander Hartmaier (firstname.lastname@example.org) not later than September 19, 2021.
