The successful candidate will be the director of the Institute of Molecular Biotechnology
at the ABBt – Aachen Biology and Biotechnology Department at RWTH Aachen University,
with a focus on molecular biotechnology under consideration of bio-economy aspects.
Research activities are expected to contribute to the key research area "Biobased
Materials and Molecules," focusing on synthetic biology (cell-based technology
platforms), biocatalysis (covering a wide range from molecular through to chemical engineering
aspects), and the development of cell lines and microbial or plant-based systems.
Activities in these fields are to be combined with research in materials conversion,
chemical engineering, and the use of biological resources, and should result in Integrated
The appointee will teach courses in molecular biotechnology and related fields within
the Bachelor‘s and Master‘s degree programs offered by the Aachen Biology and Biotechnology
department. Furthermore, the appointee is expected to participate in interdisciplinary
collaboration, contribute to ongoing projects at RWTH Aachen University, in
particular at the Bioeconomy Science Center (BioSC), and contribute to academic selfadministration.
The Fraunhofer Institute for Molecular Biology and Applied Ecology (IME) conducts research
in the applied life sciences, from the molecular level through to entire ecosystems.
Fields of application include all areas of the life sciences addressed with the help
of plant, insect, industrial, and pharmaceutical biotechnology. The interdisciplinary organization,
its state-of- the-art labs, facilities, and equipment, including greenhouses,
GMP facilities, complex facilities for environmental simulations and a center for clinical
studies enable the institute to provide a wide range of research and development services
alongside complex value chains. Currently, the institute, which is a member of the
Fraunhofer Group for Life Sciences, has about 600 staff at six national and two international
Responsibilities of a Fraunhofer management board member include strategically developing
the Institute‘s business areas, securing the high scientific quality of its R&D
activities, acquiring research and development projects, and managing the institute‘s
operations as well as its members of staff.
We are seeking an individual with an excellent, proven track record of achievement in
the above named areas, who is able to represent the Institute and its areas of expertise
in academia as well as vis-à- vis research funding bodies and partners in contractual
research. The appointee will be expected to have an excellent, internationally visible
scientific standing, experience in teaching and leadership, and proven success in acquiring
external funding. Moreover, the candidate should bring entrepreneurial thinking
to the organization and have established networks in science and industry. Highly
valued is proven success in acquiring contract research projects, especially with industrial
partners and public funding organizations.
Requirements for appointment include a doctoral degree and additional academic
achievements, such as completion of a habilitation thesis (post-doctoral lecturing qualification),
an exemplary record of research achievement as an assistant/associate
/junior professor or university researcher and/or an outstanding career outside academia.
Ability in and commitment to teaching are expected, and the application should include
proof of teaching experience and success.
The successful candidate has long-term experience with leading large, interdisciplinary
research groups; experience with the strategic planning, acquisition, and implementation
of large-scale national and international research and development projects in different
business areas; and is skilled in enhancing the efficiency of development processes
and in the commercialization of technologies.
