Job description

The University of Twente (UT) invites senior researchers with an outstanding research record to apply for the position of full professor in Computational Statistics for the Department of Applied Mathematics within the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science. Candidates qualifying for a full professorship within a period of maximum 3 years are also invited to apply.

Computational statistics is broadly interpreted as the mathematical science of learning from data, interpreting data, and using data for the design of better computational methods. The research of the new professor will focus on the development and mathematical analysis of computational and statistical methods, next to their use in application areas. Possible research focus might include the mathematical foundations of machine learning, statistical learning, learning theory, statistical inference and Bayesian methods.

Your position will be part of the initiative of the faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) at the University of Twente to build a new, multidisciplinary group around the research areas computational statistics, data science, and statistical signal processing to which all three departments of the faculty will contribute.

You are capable to develop collaboration between mathematics and the multidisciplinary research context at the University of Twente. These collaborations can be established through one of the research institutes, i.e., CTIT institute on ICT, MESA+ institute for Nanotechnology, or MIRA institute for biomedical technology and technical medicine.

You will be involved in the teaching program of the Department of Applied Mathematics and you are also expected to transfer your own specific expertise to the master programs.

Requirements

You have developed a clear research line, illustrated by publications in top journals and acquired research funding.

The faculty will form a multidisciplinary group around the research areas computational statistics, data science, and statistical signal processing. Depending on experience and seniority, you will play a leading role in this multidisciplinary group.

The candidate must have a passion for teaching at all levels and has obtained (an equivalent of) the Dutch Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO) or is willing to do so. Because women are still underrepresented in a number of fields, they are particularly encouraged to apply.

Information and applications

Applications (including CV, list of publications, research statement and three names of potential references) can be submitted online before 1st of May 2017 via the link below.

For more information please contact Prof. dr. P.M.G. Apers (dean of the Faculty EEMCS), (phone +31534895251, email p.m.g.apers@utwente.nl) or prof. dr. S.A. van Gils (head of the department of Applied Mathematics), (phone +3153489340, email s.a.vangils@utwente.nl).

The interviews with the Advisory Committee will be held on June 12, 2017.

Conditions of employment

The University offers a full time tenured position as Professor with a competitive salary (maximum € 9.246,- euro gross per month) and benefits commensurate with your position, experience and qualifications. The position comes with the possibility to hire an additional assistant professor. In case the candidate qualifies for a full professorship within three years, a PhD position will be offered as well.

We offer other excellent terms of employment, such as: Professional and personal development programs; a dynamic environment with enthusiastic colleagues in an organization in which internationalization is an important part of the strategic agenda; a high degree of responsibility and independence, while collaboration with close colleagues, researchers and other university staff is strongly encouraged.

Employer

The University of Twente. We stand for life sciences and technology. High tech and human touch. Education and research that matter. New technology which drives change, innovation and progress in society. The University of Twente is the only campus university in the Netherlands; divided over six faculties we provide more than fifty educational programmes. The University of Twente has a strong focus on personal development and talented researchers are given scope for carrying out pioneering research.

The faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) comprises three disciplines that shape Information and Communication Technology. ICT is more than communication. In almost every product we use mathematics, electronics and computer technology and ICT now contributes to all of societies' activities. The faculty works together intensively with industrial partners and researchers in the Netherlands and abroad and conducts extensive research for external commissioning parties and funders. The research which enjoys a high profile both at home and internationally, has been accommodated in the multidisciplinary research institutes MESA+, CTIT and MIRA.
