At Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH), the following positions is to be filled:

Endowed Junior Professorship (W1) with Tenure Track to Full Professorship (W3)
in the Area of Applied polymer physics

Ref. No. P2204

In cooperation with the charitable Ingeborg Gross Foundation (www.ingeborg-gross-stiftung.de), the School of Mechanical Engineering seeks to appoint an individual who will conduct innovative research in the field of the description and predictive understanding of the physical properties of macromolecules, polymer materials and plastics. The junior professorship is aimed at young scientists in an early career phase after their doctorate whose research is characterised by close links to polymer chemistry and chemical reaction engineering.

At the interface between application and fundamental science, the junior professorship is intended to give an important impetus for manufacturing processes of polymers in mechanical engineering and various areas of process engineering. To achieve this goal, the junior professorship will be endowed with generous resources for research. The focus of the applicant’s research should lie in one or more of the following areas:

  • Relaxation behaviour of polymer networks, e.g., material properties such as elasticity, viscoelasticity
  • Cross-linking mechanisms and the decomposition of thermosets
  • Phase diagrams of polymer blends, thermodynamic descriptions and segregation mechanisms
  • Structure and properties of functional polymers which ideally include conductive, shape memory and photo polymers
Tasks in research and teaching include the development and dissemination of basic principles of polymer physics, the methods of polymer physics for processability and their technical applicability. The future junior professor is expected to teach basic and advanced courses within the study programs of the Schools of Mechanical Engineering and Multidisciplinary Engineering Science and Technology both in English and German. Willingness to acquire third-party funding is expected.

This professorship is due to commence as soon as possible.

The appointment is initially limited to three years, with the possibility of an extension for a further three years after a positive interim evaluation. In the event of a positive final evaluation, the position will be converted into a permanent W3 full professorship.

The deadline for applications is May 19, 2022.

The Hamburg University of Technology is an equal opportunity employer and particularly welcomes and encourages applications from women. Woman are underrepresented among professors at the TUHH. They will therefore be given preferential consideration in the case of equivalent qualifications. Applications by disabled persons with equal qualifications will be given preference.

You can submit your application (including CV, a list of publications, relevant certificates and a brief overview of research activities and teaching experience) in German or English via our application portal. To access the application portal, click on “Open Positions” at www.tuhh.de/faculty-recruiting.

For questions, please contact the Vice President of Research, Prof. Dr.-lng. Irina Smirnova, via e-mail: berufungen@tuhh.de.

Please note that the specification of professors’ responsibilities is subject to review at regular intervals in accordance with Section 12 (7) of the Hamburg Higher Education Act (HmbHG). The hiring requirements according to § 18 HmbHG in combination with § 14 section 4 HmbHG apply.
