FRAUNHOFER-INSTITUTE FOR WIND ENERGY SYSTEMS
DO YOU WANT TO HELP SHAPE THE FUTURE OF WIND ENERGY? YOU WANT STRENGTHEN YOUR LIDAR KNOWLEDGE? THEN WE, THE FRAUNHOFER INSTITUTE FOR WIND ENERGY SYSTEMS IWES, OFFER YOU AN EXCITING POSITION IN BREMERHAVEN AS A:
EARLY STAGE RESEARCHER /
PHD POSITION (F/M)
FOCUSING ON FLOATING LIDAR FOR THE EU
FUNDED PROJECT
LIDAR KNOWLEDGE EUROPE (LIKE)
Who we are...
Wind energy is our primary focus. Our institute is home to more than 250 employees and students from over 30 countries pursuing careers in applied research and development.
We achieve this with a combination of an internationally unique testing infrastructure and extensive methods expertise in the fields of the reliability and validation of wind turbines.
These duties are awaiting you...
Fraunhofer IWES, as partner in the LIKE consortium, provides a PhD position for the project Combination of floating lidar measurements with numerical modelling for an
integrated offshore wind resource assessment (ESR 4). The overall research objective of the PhD project is to investigate how floating lidar technology, installed on a
frequently running ferry connection, should be applied in an optimal way to assess wind energy relevant offshore wind resources and site conditions, both in combination
with mesoscale flow modelling and the use of satellite remote sensing data. Amongst other things, this includes the definition of the optimal lidar setup and configuration
for this type of application, an integrated data concept considering the different data sources, a methodology for an optimal combination of different data sources, and
a comprehensive uncertainty assessment.
Bored? Not here!
Your day-to-day work is very varied as you will combine high-level research with industry relevant applications. You will have your position at Fraunhofer IWES but also be part of a European network of young researchers including trainings and research stays at different institutions - in particular, you will have three secondments of 2 - 3 months each at the University Bergen (Norway), the University Oldenburg (Germany) and DTU Wind Energy (Denmark).
Our strength lies in our cooperation.
We are approachable, share our expertise, and offer each other support, even when the duties in question are not our own. To take all aspects of projects into consideration, we all work together closely, irrespective of our backgrounds. And, of course, we have experts in the institute who will support you in achieving your PhD.
