Genes, Environment and Inflammation

The University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein is one of the largest university hospitals in Europe with more than 80 clinics and institutes. It offers outstanding medical treatment and excellence in research and education with nearly 13,000 employees, 2,600 patient beds and more than 100,000 hospitalized patients, 240,000 outpatient cases and in excess of 3,000 births a year. We provide top research at the interface of medicine, science and technology and maintain research co-operations with universities all over the world.
In Kiel we offer a structured doctoral qualification program within the research field of the Research Training Group (RTG) "Genes, Environment and Inflammation", starting 1 October 2018. The interrelations between the environment and genetic factors in chronic inflammation have still not been well understood. Our results will help to define novel pathophysiological trigger factors for chronic inflammation and aid in the development of innovative therapeutic approaches.

What you can expect:

  • work on an exciting scientific research project in bioinformatics or statistics - in cooperation with other doctoral researchers - using real clinical data in a modern computing environment
  • conduct a research stay at external partner laboratories and attend tutorials and soft skills courses

What we expect:

You should have a degree (master’s degree, diploma) in informatics, bioinformatics, statistics, mathematics or a related discipline. As you will work in an international environment, strong communication skills in English are required.

What we offer:

  • an exceptional technical infrastructure (next generation sequencing instruments, high-throughput computing clusters, for example at the Center of Molecular Biosciences/ZMB, see www.zmb.uni-kiel.de)
  • an interesting network of scientists and clinicians of various institutes at both universities, in Kiel and Lübeck (see also Cluster of Excellence "Inflammation at Interfaces": http://inflammation-at-interfaces.de/en)
  • structured supervision by two supervisors from different fields and the possibility to get advice from other members of the group
  • regular meetings with the group, field-specific trainings according to individual needs, soft skills courses
  • an attractive environment, as the universities in Kiel and Lübeck are located directly at the Baltic Sea, offering various recreational activities
The positions are fixed-term positions ending on 30 September 2021 (starting 1 October 2018). Weekly  working time is 75% of a full-time position. Salary will be, depending on qualifications, according to the German salary scale 13 TV-L.
We support you in balancing your work and personal life, and we also consider your future, offering childcare arrangements - with holiday childcare for school children and "backup" childcare for kindergarten children - as well as fitness programs at special company rates, company and university sports activities, internal development opportunities with further education and training and a company pension scheme.
The University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein and its subsidiaries are equal opportunity employers committed to tolerance, diversity and inclusion in the workplace. We value a diverse workforce and welcome applications from both men and women alike.
