We are seeking a highly motivated scientist with a strong background in fossil mammal research and with the desire to collaborate in one of the museum's areas of research emphasis (in particular the study of fossil lagerstätten). The candidate should have the ability to work as part of a team, and the desire to conduct original research. The State Museum of Natural History Stuttgart (SMNS) is an internationally renowned research institution. It houses a large and internationally well-known Cenozoic mammal collection, including iconic specimens such as the type of Homo steinheimensis.


 

Curator of Fossil Mammals (m/f/d) (Palaeontology Department) at the State Museum of Natural History Stuttgart

Duties:
  • Conduct high quality, predominantly collection-based research on fossil mammals
  • Publish in internationally renowned journals on a regular basis
  • Develop externally funded interdisciplinary research projects
  • Management, conservation, and expansion of the fossil mammal collections, according to international standards
  • Public outreach activities: science communication and scientific conceptual design of exhibitions
  • Leadership skills in the supervision of technical staff and students
Your profile:
  • PhD in Palaeontology/Earth Sciences/Biology
  • Comprehensive knowledge (including species diversity) of fossil mammal faunas, preferably from more than one geological period
  • Expertise in systematics, phylogeny, evolution, paleoecology and fossil lagerstaetten
  • An outstanding publication record
  • Experience in working with scientific collections
  • Successful national and international scientific collaborations and interdisciplinary projects
  • Experience with fossil excavations
  • Experience in public outreach
  • Willingness to teach at university level
  • Good team player skills, willingness to serve on internal committees and to conduct interdisciplinary research projects with SMNS colleagues linking palaeontology with biology
  • Ability to supervise technical staff and graduate and postgraduate students
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Basic knowledge of German language or willingness to acquire this knowledge in due course

    Salary will follow E 13 TV-L (German civil service salary scale). The position is initially limited to a five-year term, with the possibility of being converted to a permanent appointment at the end of this period. The official language of the institution is German, but applications in English will be considered. The position is intended to be filled by January 2021. SMNS strives to increase the proportion of women and, therefore, we especially encourage the application of highly-qualified female scientists.
