Ruhr-Universität Bochum / Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety, and Energy Technology / RWE Power AGBochum
The Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) is one of Germany‘s leading research universities.
The University draws its strengths from both the diversity and the proximity of scientific and engineering
disciplines on a single, coherent campus. This highly dynamic setting enables students and
researchers to work across traditional boundaries of academic subjects and faculties.
CHAIR „CSC - CARBON SOURCES AND CONVERSION“ (W3)
In cooperation with the Research Department „Closed Carbon Cycle Economy“, the Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental,
Safety, and Energy Technology UMSICHT as well as RWE Power AG the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering is recruiting a
candidate for the following endowed chair starting 1 January 2018: Chair „CSC - Carbon Sources and Conversion“ (W3)
In an interdisciplinary Research Department (RD) the Ruhr-Universität in co-operation with non-academic partners researches
the technical, economic, ecologic and social elements of a closed carbon cycle economy. The RD combines competencies from
the fields of natural, engineering and social sciences. Apart from interlinking existing research structures the aim is to
establish new research and teaching that is oriented towards a closed carbon cycle economy in a systemic and interdisciplinary way.
The new Chair „Carbon Sources and Conversion“ is designed to develop fundamental and application
oriented concepts for a sustainable utilization of carbon as well as to expand the knowledge for the utilization of carbon
through teaching and education. The main focus is put on exploiting domestic, industrial and regenerative carbon sources,
developing process technologies for conversion as well as products and on researching the basic principles of technical
carbon cycles. The aim is to demonstrate economically and ecologically suitable conversion technologies for all available
resources in laboratory and pilot scale. For this purpose the Chair co-operates with the Fraunhofer Institute UMSICHT in
Oberhausen and with the "Innovationszentrum Kohle" (Innovation Centre Coal) in Niederaußem and its laboratory and site
infrastructure provided by RWE Power AG.
The successful candidate is to represent the entire breadth of the research and teaching subject. Ideally, he/she has outstanding
knowledge in process technology and organic structural chemistry, technical catalysis as well as analytics and characterization
of complex organic structures. Additional experience in system analysis and/or sustainability assessment would be of advantage.
We are looking for a researcher who is internationally recognized in his/her central area of work. We expect the successful
candidate to be willing to work interdisciplinary. He/she should also have the ability to develop new perspectives and projects
for larger research alliances including the acquisition of external funding. This also includes active contributions to designing
the Research Department "Closed Carbon Cycle Economy" together with a larger team.
Positive evaluation as a junior professor or equivalent academic achievement (e.g. Habilitation) or significant post-doctoral
research contributions and teaching experience are as much required as the willingness to participate in the self-governing
bodies of the RUB.
The conditions for engagement provided for in Article 36 of the Higher Education Act of the state of North-Rhine Westphalia do apply.
Ruhr-Universität Bochum is an equal opportunity employer.
Please send your application for this Chair including the standard documents (cover letter or motivation letter, respectively,
scientific career, previous teaching activities, list of reviewed publications in national and international journals as well
as copies/special prints of 2 - 3 exemplary publications, certificates/diplomas, list of previously acquired external funding)
to the following address by 26 June 2017, either in writing or by e-mail: Dekan der Fakultät für Maschinenbau der Ruhr-Universität
Bochum, Herrn Prof. Dr.-Ing. Roland Span, Universitätsstraße 150, 44780 Bochum, Germany or
