Five Assistant Professorships in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence
The Department of Data Science and Knowledge Engineering (DKE) at Maastricht University, the
Netherlands, invites applications for five full-time assistant professor positions in the following fields:
We seek for young scientists with profound knowledge and expertise in one or several topics within any of these fields. The successful applicants will have the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research and to teaching (in English) in a highly stimulating academic environment.
----- Main requirements
Applicants should fulfill the following main requirements:
Ph.D. degree in data science, artificial Intelligence, computer science, mathematics, or a related field
A proven postdoc track record in state-of-the-art research and teaching
Experience in the acquisition of research funding
A personality characterized by team spirit, ambition, and vision
We particularly welcome applicants whose research has led to, or has the obvious potential to lead to real-world applications and collaborations with companies and industry.
Maastricht University requires teaching staff to have the "Basiskwalificatie Onderwijs" (BKO, Basic teaching qualification). Successful applicants who do not yet possess the BKO are expected to obtain this qualification preferably within the first year. Maastricht University and our department support its staff in obtaining the BKO.
----- Main responsibilities
The main responsibilities of successful applicants will be:
Conducting leading basic and/or applied research in their fields
Research funding acquisition at the national and European scale
Offering courses at the bachelor and master level in English
Supervision of students at all levels (BSc, MSc, PhD)
----- Contract type and conditions of employment
The positions are offered as tenure-track positions for five years, with an evaluation and decision on tenure (transition to permanent) during this period. Intended start date is 1-9-2017.
Salary is competitive, depending on qualifications and work experience. The salary will be set in salary scale 11 of the collective labor agreement of the Dutch Universities, ranging from €3427 to €4691 for a full-time job. On top of this, there is an 8% holiday and an 8.3% year-end allowance. Non-Dutch applicants may be eligible for a favorable tax treatment (30% rule).

Founded in 1992 as part of the Faculty of Humanities and Sciences, today DKE broadly covers Knowledge Engineering in research and teaching. DKE comprises three internationally respected research groups, having their focus on "Robotics, Agents and Interaction", "Networks and Strategic Optimization", and "Biomathematics and Bioinformatics". Education programs currently offered by DKE are Data Science & Knowledge Engineering (bachelor), Artificial Intelligence and Data Science for Decision Making (both master programmes).
