The Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences invites applications for a
W3-Professorship in the field of Demography
starting 1 April 2011 (within budget considerations).
The professor will teach the subject "Demography" in all of its aspects, with an emphasis on the areas of mortality and migration. Teaching encompasses lectures in the area of demographic methods at both the BA- and MA-level, as well as in the doctoral program. It is expected that the candidate can also teach her/his courses in English. In regard to research, we expect the successful candidate to actively contribute to interdisciplinary research in the field of "Aging Science and Humanities" at the university's new interdisciplinary faculty. Research emphasis in the area of formal demography as well as in the thematic areas mortality and migration is desired; a strong methodological and empirical orientation and the willingness to cooperate intensively with other researchers in these fields are mandatory. An intense collaboration with the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock is desirable.
The University of Rostock puts particular emphasis on the academic counselling of students and thus expects extensive presence of its teaching staff at the university. In order to strengthen ties to the region, the university expects the professor to be willing to relocate to the Rostock region.

Qualifications are as per § 58 of the Higher Education Act of the State of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (LHG M-V) (post-doctoral thesis ("Habilitation") or equivalent qualifications).
A special focus is placed on academic achievement and teaching qualifications as well scientific organization and academic administration. For this reason candidates should describe previous teaching results, ideas regarding future teaching (including didactic lesson planning) and their prior experience in academic and scientific management.
In addition, candidates are expected to have experience and interest in developing research programs that can attract and maintain external funding.
The professorship will be filled according to § 61 LHG M-V as a position with civil servant status for 5 years, the contract can be extended. It is also possible to fill the position as a regular state employee.
