The LOEWE - Universities of Giessen and Marburg Lung Center (UGMLC) constitutes a unique translational research centre, dedicated to combine cutting edge basic sciences with preclinical and clinical studies in the field of lung and airway diseases. Research is organized on different levels of complexity such as molecular signatures and target structures, cellular phenotypes, integrative - including developmental - biology, disease models and preclinical studies as well as clinical trials. The UGMLC aims to install a

W3 Professorship for Lung Repair and Regeneration

(Reference is made to § 61 section 7 Hessisches Hochschulgesetz [HHG]
and to conditions of employment based on § 62 Hessisches Hochschulgesetz [HHG])

This professorship at the University of Giessen is expected to address the regeneration of pulmonary tissues as a central topic within the UGMLC. The degenerative processes which underlie the loss of lung parenchyma and airways and the formation of fibrotic tissue will be analysed at the molecular level. In turn, novel therapeutic concepts for generation, maintenance, and regeneration of lung parenchyma and airways will be developed.

A contingent including 2 doctoral fellows, 3 doctoral students, 1 technician, 1 secretary including specific equipment and consumables will be assigned to each professorship. The University of Giessen will provide appropriate laboratory facilities and basic laboratory equipment. Moreover, the groups will also take part in the LOEWE-UGMLC competition for project support.

This professorship is newly established and funded by the program „Landesoffensive zur Entwicklung Wissenschaftlich-ökonomischer Exzellenz“ (LOEWE) of the state of Hessen. Thereafter, continuous financing will be provided by the Medical Faculty of the Justus Liebig University of Giessen. According to § 71 HHG the following qualifications are required: Full university education in a biomedical or related discipline; a doctorate with merit; outstanding scientific achievements and academic teaching references. Applicants are expected to actively participate in the activities of the UGMLC and in the teaching of pulmonary medicine, e.g. in graduate school programs.
