This vacancy will be filled in the framework of a joint procedure of appointment with the University in accordance with para. 62 of the Law on Universities in the Free State of Saxony (SächsHSFG).
In accordance with para. 1 of its bylaws, the main task of the Simon Dubnow Institute for Jewish History and Culture is to conduct research on the Jewish life worlds in Central and East-Central Europe in their mutual relations with the surrounding non-Jewish environments from the medieval period to the present day. The conception of the Jews as a diasporic population with a high degree of vertical and horizontal mobility provides such inquiry with a transnational pers­pec­tive, seeking to transverse traditional historical spaces and to un­der­stand the Jewish experience as a seismograph for wider historical developments. At present the institute's focus of research centers on the period from the late 18^th century up to World War II. In this context, increasing investigation of postwar history, incorporating approaches in the history of memory, were un­der­ta­ken recently. Candidates should be scholars working within a broad in­ter­dis­ci­pli­na­ry approach in the cultural sciences while having specialized themselves in one of the historical disciplines in Jewish Studies. Knowledge of Hebrew is required, knowledge of further Jewish languages is useful, and knowledge of an East-Central or East-European language is desirable. The successful candidate, by dint of recognition as an established scholar, should be able to convincingly represent the Simon Dubnow Institute internationally, and will also have de­mons­tra­ted experience in international scientific cooperation. Experience in co­o­pe­ra­tive ventures in research with Israeli universities and research institutions is highly desirable. Rights and obligations of the jobholder are within the SächsHSFG and the Saxony public service task regulation. Candidates must fulfill the prerequisites for appointment as Professor in accordance with para. 58 SächsHSFG.
