He or she will work within the “Global climate modelling” group and be part of the European Union Framework Programme 7 project “Comprehensive Modelling of the Earth System for Better Climate Prediction and Projection” (COMBINE, http://www.combineproject.eu). Within this project, the successful candidate will be responsible for conducting a set of simulations using a new, advanced Earth system model. The scientific work will include the analysis of transient climate simulations of different complexity, assessment of the influence of model improvements and increased complexity on simulated climate feedbacks and climate sensitivity, investigation of different representations of stratospheric processes on simulated climate.

Requirements:

  • A PhD in Meteorology, Atmospheric Sciences, or related fields,
  • Above-average programming skills (FORTRAN, Unix shell scripts, visualisation),
  • Experience in climate modelling and/or climate data analysis
  • A background in studies of stratospheric processes and/or climate sensitivity / climate feedback analysis
  • Good knowledge of the English language (skills in German are welcomed),

The position is offered for three years, starting June 2010 or soon thereafter, with payment according to a civil service position (TVöD E13) with extensive social security plans included. The conditions of employment, including upgrades and duration, follow the rules of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Sciences and those of the German civil service.

The Max Planck Institute is one of the premier climate science research institutes in the world. Located in the heart of one of Europe’s most liveable and vibrant cities it provides a highly international and interdisciplinary environment for conducting scientific research as well as access to state of the art scientific facilities, including high performance computing.
