The German University in Cairo seeks applicants for a 3 year contract position at the rank of a Professor/Lecturer within the Theory Department of the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Arts.
The Theory Department offers essential foundation knowledge alongside the three offered majors Product Design, Media Design and Graphic Design. Its courses and content are strongly linked to the majors.
The German University is currently looking to develop and expand its academic strength at undergraduate level as well as graduate level. The particular fields of interest are design foundations as well as major and post graduate design studies. The positions will preferably be occupied by design theory professionals (designers, design researchers, social scientists, cultural scientists, art historians) with a design related background in academics and/or practical fields.
All positions require a close communication with the three majors Product Design, Media Design and Graphic Design on course contents and curriculum development.
Candidates should present evidence of innovative pedagogical approaches and depict their ability to respond to the complex regional and yet global challenges of a design education within Cairo.
Professors/Lecturers are expected to take over responsibilities in developing the undergraduate as well as the graduate studies program further, discuss and cooperate within interdisciplinary teams of academics as well as external partners and with a variety of students coming from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Professors/Lecturers undertake administrative responsibilities and actively participate within the development and organization of Theory Department within the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Arts.
Applicants are requested to present their currently performed research activity and future research interest which preferably is related to the described fields of experience or any of the three design majors.
Objectives/requirements of both positions
Applicants for the position of a professor should preferably hold the rank of a professor or hold a PhD degree or demonstrated PhD equivalent experience in the fields of design management or design strategy or semiotics or design research.
They should have at least 10 years of practical and 5 years of teaching experience.
Applicants for the position of a lecturer should hold a master degree or diploma (german). They should have at least 5 years of practical and 3 years of teaching experience.
Applicants requirements:
· Updated knowledge of current and future issues within the field of design education-excellence in research, scholarship, design or creative practice
· Competence of working well with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, professional training and aesthetic sensibilities
· Understanding of the implications of design practice in relationship to broader social, cultural, economic, scientific and technological forces
· Ability to develop and nurture student’s design abilities according to project- and environmental properties
· Strong commitment to progressive design education principles regarding a self organized and responsible design study
· Strong competences to structure and define project goals in order to foster and motivate positive experiences
· Curiosity to widen the perception within the design discipline and thus create a foundation for design oriented actions and mindsets
· Excellent writing and interpersonal communication skills
· Good management skills, including the ability to meet deadlines, communicate and motivate effectively
· An interest in working collaboratively within the GUC and with external partners towards the development of shared projects and initiatives
