Organisation
The University of Twente. We stand for life sciences and technology. High tech and human touch. Education and research that matter. New technology which drives change, innovation and progress in society. The University of Twente is the only campus university in the Netherlands; divided over six faculties we provide more than fifty educational programmes. The University of Twente has a strong focus on personal development and talented researchers are given scope for carrying out pioneering research.
The faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) comprises three disciplines that shape Information and Communication Technology. ICT is more than communication. In almost every product we use mathematics, electronics and computer technology and ICT now contributes to all of societies' activities. The faculty works together intensively with industrial partners and researchers in the Netherlands and abroad and conducts extensive research for external commissioning parties and funders. The research which enjoys a high profile both at home and internationally, has been accommodated in the multidisciplinary research institutes MESA+, CTIT and MIRA.
PhD Position in "Boiling Flow-Regime Maps"
Job description
Within the group for Multiscale Modeling and Simulation of the
Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Twente a vacancy for a PhD student exists. This position is part of a joint project with the Process Technology Group at Eindhoven University of Technology, involving a further experimental PhD and a computational PD position. Both research groups are members of the Center for Interface Research (CIR), a collaborative research center of scientists from the Universities of Delft, Eindhoven and Twente. The Dutch Technology Foundation funds the project.
In this project, two PhD students and a post-doc will study flow-pattern development in heated ducts under boiling conditions. One of the PhD students, stationed in Eindhoven, will carry out experiments with two different fluids, in two test rigs, with advanced measuring techniques such as phosphoric LIF, while the second PhD student, stationed in Twente, will focus on numerical modeling and simulation of flow-pattern
development under phase transition. In the Multiscale Modeling and Simulation group research is conducted on
mathematical models, analysis and simulation strategies for fluid mechanical problems. The theme relevant for the topic of boiling flow regimes is phase-transitional flow. Particular attention in this project will go to transport processes across interfaces between vapor bubbles and liquid as occurring during flow regime transitions in heated two-phase flows.
The diffuse interface model will be further developed to allow
simulation of such flows with boiling in ducts. The connection with the experimental work will be sought to strengthen the validation of the model and facilitate scaling of the flow-regime maps measured.
The PhD student in this computational modeling project will contribute to the research objectives through:
- development of new simulation capabilities in multiphase fluid dynamics for simulation of boiling phenomena;
- implementation of numerical methods on High Performance Computing facilities;
- application of the developed simulation tools to a range of realistic regimes of boiling heat and mass transfer.
