Ruhr-Universität Bochum

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) is one of Germany’s leading research universities. The University draws its strengths from both the diversity and the proximity of scientific and engineering disciplines on a single, coherent campus. This highly dynamic setting enables students and researchers to work across traditional boundaries of academic subjects and faculties. The RUB is a vital institution in the Ruhr area, which has been selected as European Capital of Culture for the year 2010.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Ruhr-University Bochum invites applications for the position of a

Full Professor (W3) for Machine Elements and Systems

which are to be filled as soon as possible. The future holders of the positions will represent the respective subjects in research and teaching.

For the position, research areas of particular interest are the design of machine elements and systems with a focus on fatigue strength, system and operational reliability. Ideal candidates carry out research on the interface between machine structures and powertrains. Teaching obligations for the position include graduate courses on the respective research topics as well as undergraduate machine element courses. Successful candidates will be appointed head of the Chair of Product Development and the Chair of Machine Elements and Systems, respectively.

The department is committed to carrying out fundamental engineering research on topics of industrial relevance. Ideal candidates have both a strong academic background and work experience in an industrial field related to the respective research topics.

Positive evaluation as a junior professor or equivalent academic achievement (e.g. habilitation) and evidence of special aptitude are just as much required as the willingness to participate in the self-governing bodies of the RUB and to generally get involved in university processes according to RUB’s mission statement.

Furthermore, a high commitment in teaching, the readiness to participate in interdisciplinary academic work, and the willingness and ability to attract external funding are expected.

The Ruhr-Universität Bochum is an equal opportunity employer.

Complete applications with a CV, statement of objectives in teaching and research, proof of degrees, and list of publications should be sent to the Dean of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Prof. Dr.-Ing. W. Theisen, of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, 44780 Bochum, Germany no later than February 29th, 2012.
