Rheinische Friedrich- Wilhelms-Universität Bonn - geoverbund ABC/J

The Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn is offering a position for an

Experienced PostDoc & Simulation Lab Coordinator

beginning as soon as possible.

The Geoverbund ABC/J recently founded the Simulation Lab for High-Performance Scientific Computing in Terrestrial Systems (HPSC-TerrSys). The Geoverbund is a cooperation between the geosciences at the Universities of Aachen, Bonn, Cologne and the Forschungszentrum Jülich.

The research activities of the Simulation Lab are centred around three main scientific and technical topics:
- the set-up of various two-way coupled high resolution subsurface – land surface - atmospheric simulation platforms,
- the handling of a broad range of in situ and remotely sensed measurements by the applied simulation platforms using flexible, code independent algorithms,
- the improved parameterization of sub-grid scale biogeophysical processes, in particular water and nutrient uptake by plants and estimation of thermal and hydraulic properties of the subsurface.

The HPC activities will focus on efficient parallelization and scalability of the scientific codes, hybrid parallelization, utilization of graphics processing units, scientific code maintenance, scientific visualization, and future exascale applications.

Main tasks of the position are:
- to coordinate HPC activities within the simulation lab and the Geoverbund including its linkage with on-going and future research activities.
- to facilitate a fluent communication between all HPC activities and the involved research scientists in the Geoverbund,
- to perform research in the overlap between HPC and geosciences.

The salary scale of the PostDoc will be E 14 TV-L. The position is limited to two years, with the possibility of extension. The successful applicant will be employed by the University of Bonn. His/her main working place will be the Jülich Supercomputing Center (JSC) in order to allow optimal cooperation between other simulation lab activities.

Requirements:
The candidate is expected to hold a PhD in geosciences, physics or a related discipline and to have about two years of experience as postdoctoral researcher. Competent knowledge in fluid dynamics, HPC, and programming (e.g.  Matlab, Fortran, C/C++, Python) is required. Knowledge in the areas of meteorology, hydrology, soil science and numerical methods is an advantage. The candidate should be highly motivated, fluent in English, should have very good interpersonal communication skills, and is interested in working in an interdisciplinary and international team of scientists. We offer outstanding research conditions within an interdisciplinary team.

The University of Bonn is an equal opportunities employer. Preference will be given to suitably qualified women. Equally qualified severely handicapped applicants will be given preference.
