 The University of Stavanger invites applications for a position as Associate Professor in the field of petroleum geophysics within the Faculty of Science and Technology, Department of Petroleum Engineering.
 
 The position is initially funded by ConocoPhillips Skandinavia AS.
 
 The responsibilities of the position include research, supervision of student research, teaching of courses and student evaluation, as well as administration related to the performance of these duties.
 
 The responsibilities comprise research, supervision, teaching, student assessment related to the field above and administration.
 
 The education required for the position is a Ph.D. degree or corresponding competence within the academic field of petroleum geophysics or closely related areas of the geosciences. In addition, the appointee must be able to document extensive academic qualifications (publications, etc.) within central areas of geophysics or the related geosciences and through her/his work to have demonstrated scientific competence within one or more areas of the discipline. The ability to initiate, develop and direct research projects, and to carry them to completion, will be given high priority.
 
 The language of instruction is normally Norwegian. The appointee must have a good command of oral and written Norwegian or another Scandinavian language, or acquire such language competence within a period of two years. The appointee must also be prepared to teach classes in English.
 
 If there are no fully qualified applicants, temporary employment could be offered for a period of three years, provided the applicant is judged to have the potential to become fully qualified within this period.
 
 The position is salaried according to the State Salary Code. For associate professors, l.pl 17.510, code 1011, ltr 58-62, of NOK 464 300 – 499 500,- per annum. In special cases higher salaries may apply.
 
 The position provides for automatic membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, which guarantees favorable retirement benefits. Members may also apply for home investment loans at favorable interest rates.

 The University of Stavanger (UiS) currently enrolls 9 000 students and employs 1 200 teaching and administrative staff. It is committed to excellence in research, creative arts and teaching. It offers a variety of academic and professional bachelor, master and doctoral programs as well as in-service and further education programs
 
 Academic activity at the University is organized into the Faculty of Arts and Education, the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Faculty of Science and Technology and the Archeological Museum.
 
 The Faculty of Science and Technology is made up of five departments: the Department of Petroleum Engineering, the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, the Department of Industrial Economics, Risk Management and Planning, the Department of Mathematics and Natural Science and the Department of Mechanical and Structural Engineering and Materials Science.
 
 The present position is a University appointment. Administratively it is placed within the Faculty of Science and Technology, in the Department of Petroleum Engineering.
 
 The position will strengthen the petroleum geosciences program in the area of petroleum geophysics, and will also strengthen research at UiS within the Department of Petroleum Engineering in the area of geophysics or the related geosciences.
 
 The Department is looking for expertise in an area related to the acquisition, processing, modelling or interpretation of geophysical data, particularly 2D and 3D seismic data. The appointee is expected to develop a productive research program, preferably, but not necessarily, in exploration seismology, where relevant areas of focus include: seismic processing, seismic imaging, seismic inversion, wave theory, seismic modelling, time-lapse seismic, reservoir characterization, lithology and rock physics, pressure and fluid prediction, as well as special aspects of 3D seismic surveying, multicomponent seismology (3C and 4C) and others. The appointee is expected to integrate his/her efforts with other research programs in the Department. Experience in the fields mentioned above is desirable and will be given priority. Previous academic experience and a geoscientific track record will be considered definite assets.
 
 The appointee is expected to strengthen research within the Faculty through initiation and management of research programs in addition to individual research and teaching activities within her/his academic discipline(s). The appointee is also expected to support and participate in other research and teaching activities within the Faculty and also to accept responsibility for interdepartmental programs or projects.
 
 The appointee will conduct courses, supervise students and participate in student assessment at all levels within the field of geophysics, in addition to assuming some administrative duties. The languages of instruction are Norwegian and English.
 
 The applicant must be able to document competence in pedagogical skills on the basis of completed program(s) in applied pedagogy at the university level or other relevant training. Documented practical experience as an instructor may also be considered equivalent. Regulations for assessment of pedagogical competence required for employment in permanent (tenured) positions are available from the Faculty.
 
 Applicants will be screened by an expert committee on the basis of the material submitted. The committee will particularly consider the scholarly and scientific work submitted by the applicants, as well as their pedagogical qualifications. Experience from popularization, journalism, university politics and administration, and other relevant and documented qualifications for the position can also be considered.

 Selected applicants will be invited to an interview and asked to give a test lecture, prior to the Committee on Appointments making its final decision. This decision will also include an assessment of the applicant’s personal suitability for the position.
