Technical University of Denmark

DTU is a leading technical university in northern Europe and benchmarks with the best universities in the world. The number of publications in frequently cited scientific journals has increased in recent years, and 44% of the publications registered by the Science Citation Index of the Institute of Scientific Information (ISI) in 2005 were prepared in collaboration with one or more researchers based outside Denmark. The internationalization of DTU also continued with more than one fifth of DTU's scientific staff being recruited from outside Denmark and with an increasing number of international students.

1 Post-doctoral position

"Quantum Transport in Nanostructured Graphene" open in Center for Nanostructured Graphene (CNG)

Center for Nanostructured Graphene (CNG), is a recently established centre of excellence funded by the Danish National Research Foundation (Danske Grundforskningsfond). The goal of the center is to use advanced fabrication techniques to nanopattern graphene so that it acquires novel physical properties, which in turn can be used as a platform for basic science studies, as well as for devices with new functionalities.  The research carried out at CNG is cross-disciplinary and it involves theoretical and experimental research from many branches of physical, chemical and engineering sciences.

CNG is a collaboration between three institutes at Technical University of Denmark (DTU):  Department of Micro- and Nanotechnology , Department of Photonics, and Department of Physics, and the Faculty of Sciences at Aalborg University.  CNG benefits strongly from the access to state-of-the-art experimental facilities of Danchip (fabrication) and DTU CEN (electron microscopy) located on DTU campus, as well as the advanced computational facilities at DTU.

PhD students and post-docs will be part of a highly cross-disciplinary research team. We are therefore looking for people with an interest in team-oriented work.

For information on the overall goals of CNG you are welcome to contact Center Leader, Professor Antti-Pekka Jauho, phone.: (+45) 45256335, or email: Antti-Pekka.Jauho@nanotech.dtu.dk

The aim of this project is to study fundamental physics phenomena that may occur in nanostructured graphene, for example, graphene antidot lattices which are formed by a regular nanoperforation of a pristine graphene sheet.  Of special interest are phenomena related to magnetism, quantum coherence, and interactions. The emphasis is on analytical or semianalytical methods, but the successful candidate is expected to work in close collaboration with other theorists within the CNG using ab-initio electron structure methods, and with experimentalists who fabricate the relevant graphene structures.

Qualifications

- Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent
- Strong background in advanced techniques within condensed matter theory, such as quantum field theory, theory of mesoscopic transport phenomena, and many-body physics.
- Previous experience in graphene research is a strong asset, but in case of an exceptional candidate not an absolute requirement
- A creative and imaginative frame of mind which enables the candidate to fully exploit and expand the new possibilities offered by the novel structures fabricated within CNG
- A scientific maturity which enables the candidate to participate in the supervision of PhD and master students working on theoretical problems in CNG.
- A willingness and ability to communicate the theoretical results to the experimental colleagues is a necessity.

Salary and terms of employment
The contract is for 2 years, but can be extended to a third year on mutual consent.
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.
