University of Rostock - Traditio et Innovatio
To its 15,000 students, the University provides attractive and diversified courses of study with more than 70 different programs of study. University rankings underline the very good study conditions. Especially the new Bachelor's courses of study in engineering and natural sciences are considered as an insider tip.
According to a survey conducted by the Federal Ministry of Education, the University of Rostock and the University of Leipzig are the most popular universities in eastern Germany. This is particularly evident in the ongoing interest of young people to study in Rostock and also the continuously growing proportion of foreign students underscores the enhanced international attractiveness of the Rostock University.
Founded in 1419, the University of Rostock is the oldest university in the Baltic Sea region and the third oldest in Germany. Here, the scientific work started long before Columbus discovered America. Therefore, Traditio et Innovatio is not incidentally the guiding principle of the university. In 1952, for the first time in Germany, a technical faculty was established at a traditional university. In 2007, a further addition was made by the first interdisciplinary faculty in Germany. Research across disciplines is the credo of the interdisciplinary faculty and its three profiling fields: Life, Light & Matter, Maritime Systems and Aging Science and Humanities. It is the task and objective of the interdisciplinary faculty to maintain and enhance the international competitiveness of the Rostock University by focusing on top-level research in the areas of laser physics, regenerative medicine, medical devices and new materials.
The largest building projects are currently the campus of natural and engineering sciences, the university hospital and the renovation of the main university building. The state Mecklenburg-Vorpommern provides funds of more than 200 million € for these projects. Here, the innovative force and modernity of the university are distinctly noticeable.
"We are a future-oriented university with a strong sense of tradition. Never before have Traditio et Innovatio been more important. That is something we are proud of", says Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Schareck, rector of the University of Rostock.
