The Robert Schumann Hochschule Düsseldorf

Robert Schumann University Düsseldorf

The Robert Schumann University Düsseldorf has an international reputation. Over 900 students from more than 40 countries are trained individually and at highest standards in the capital of North-Rhine Westphalia.

The teaching on offer ranges from degree courses in "Music" and "Musical Communication" to the artistic and technical subject "Sound and Image", which combines technical and scientific training at the University of Applied Sciences Düsseldorf with a degree course in Music - unique in Germany's higher education landscape.

One distinct focus of the Robert Schumann University is the opera school. At least once a year, students demonstrate their skills in a stage performance produced in close collaboration between the university and the Deutsche Oper am Rhein (German Opera on the Rhine). Further focal points are orchestra training and Protestant and Catholic church music. The military musicians of the German armed forces also study in Düsseldorf.

A special part is played by the "Institute for Music and Media", founded in 2004, which concentrates on practically-oriented training for the music and media industries. Subjects such as Media Composition, Music Informatics, Media Dramaturgy and Management optimally prepare students for their professional careers.

In 2008 the university founded its own training centre for especially gifted young musicians. "Schumann junior" is aimed at particularly talented students from the ages of 10 to 17 years. In addition, the Robert Schumann University maintains a large symphony orchestra, several ensembles and various choirs. During the semester, the Robert Schumann University holds numerous recital and rehearsal evenings in the university's concert hall, the Partika-Saal.

The roots of the Robert Schumann University go back to 1935, when three large private schools merged into the Robert Schumann Konservatorium, which was granted the rank of university in 1972. Today, the Robert Schumann University is one of Germany's most respected universities of music.
