University of Music and Performing Arts Munich
The Hochschule für Musik und Theater München (University of Music and Performing Arts Munich) is one of the oldest and longest-established conservatories for the music and theatre professions in Germany. At the University, 1,100 students study 50 different subjects with c. 460 professors, ranging from courses for particularly gifted young musicians to masterclasses.
Range of courses
As well as training in performing and teaching in all music subjects and ballet, we also offer joint courses with the Bayerische Theaterakademie August Everding covering operatic performance, acting, directing, musicals, make-up for the theatre and lighting design. On 1 August 2008 the Richard-Strauss-Konservatorium München was amalgamated with the University, and the range of courses offered expanded to include subjects such as jazz, folk music and elementary music education.
The University maintains a high reputation for research through publications, symposia and other events organised by the Musicology Department, the Musikpädagogisches Institut für Lehrerfortbildung und Unterrichtsforschung [Music Education Institute for Teacher Training and Educational Research] (MILU) and the Musiklabor München - a project of the Echtzeithalle e.V. in cooperation with the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich. The proportion of foreign students is c. 35 %.
Five locations in Munich
The University has been in its present building at Arcisstraße 12 since 1957. In 1999 it acquired additional buildings at Luisenstraße 37a, with the 'Reaktorhalle' and 'Carl Orff Auditorium'; these were used temporarily before a complete renovation in 2008. Teaching and events also take place in the Prinzregententheater (theatre studies), in the Wilhelmstraße (ballet) and since 1 August 2008 at the Gasteig Kulturzentrum, Munich.
Concerts and events
The University of Music and Performing Arts Munich makes a major contribution to the city's musical and theatrical life with about 600 concerts and other events each year. These take place in the buildings at Arcisstraße 12 (main and small concert halls, opera school, organ recital hall, north atrium), Luisenstraße 37a (Reaktorhalle, Carl Orff Auditorium), Gasteig (Philharmonie, small concert hall, Black Box, Carl Orff Auditorium, etc.), Prinzregententheater (main house, academy theatre and academy studio) and at other performing venues in Munich.
