Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Stuttgart

State University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart

Welcome to the State University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart, an institution that trains young adults for various artistic and educational professions in the fields of orchestral instruments, piano, singing and performing arts.

It combines its tradition of being the oldest Academy of Music in Baden-Württemberg with modern offers that meet the high professional demands of today's cultural industry. 750 students from 42 nations are taught by a faculty of 120 professors and assistant professors as well as more than 150 lecturers.

The University of Music is located in the heart of the Kulturmeile ("Cultural Mile"), with the main train station and downtown Stuttgart being only a few minutes' walk away. In the form of a magnificent modern building, being a musical synthesis of the arts, which gives the Kulturmeile its pulsating heart: whether Early, Classical, Romantic, New and Contemporary Music, Puppet Theatre, Symphony, Opera and Drama, Electronic Music, Jazz or Organ Music - all this is united under one roof.

Its outstanding characteristic, well visible from the city centre is the tower - a symbol equally of perpetuity of culture and innovation, in which is the concert hall as well as the music library. Together with the chamber music hall, the orchestra rehearsal hall and the foyers and galleries, the University of Music offers highly attractive facilities for concerts and events.

Over 200 teaching rooms equipped with premium instruments are available for students. The collection of organs with more than eleven kinds of organs from different eras and regions is unparalleled throughout the world.

The University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart is Germany's only school of drama that has its own professionally run learning theater, the classical-style Wilhelma Theater, for students of the Performing Arts departments: Drama, Opera, Art of Speech and Puppet Theatre. The house also decisively influences the musical life of Stuttgart and the region, with over 450 opera and drama performances, symphony, choir, chamber music and soloist concerts, especially in terms of innovation and program variety. Hardly anywhere else can one hear as many unusually scored, rarely heard and new works.
