DFG Research Training Group 1564 - Imaging New Modalities
The focal idea of the Research Training Group is to seize recent developments in imaging for different modalities in order to facilitate innovative approaches to the field of civil security applications. The doctoral candidates are working at the intersection of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science within in a well structured interdisciplinary training program.
Electronic Engineering and Computer Science are the technological foundations of the modern information society. Solving current and future challenges requires a tight cooperation of both disciplines. This is especially true for civil security applications. Due to the high innovation dynamics in sensor development and in system requirements for civil security, this cooperation is mandatory and it has a significant synergy potential.
The Focus
The focus of this Research Training Group is the integrated investigation of imaging sensors and data processing components for civil security systems. Regarding sensing, new imaging devices are needed in order to increase the spectral resolution in the visible range or beyond, as well as to deliver additional depth information. In comparison with classical 2D sensors, these sensors reveal new possibilities for the recognition of persons, biometrics, surveillance and material analysis. The research activities include sensor data processing as the focal point as well as sensor development and sensor data analysis. Within this scope, different data processing and information extraction concepts will be comprehensively investigated.
The Challenge
An important characteristic of the research topic addressed by the Research Training Group is the methodical link from image acquisition to security application, which is bridged by image data processing components. Major challenges are the orthogonality and redundancy of multimodal data and the development of new techniques to process data from new imaging sensors. Additionally, the question of data security and data integrity for new and multi-modal data is investigated.
The Qualification Concept
The qualification concept of the Research Training Group consists of a study program focusing on sensor development and processing and the analysis of sensor data, as well as detailed recruitment and quality management actions. The program is completed by soft skill courses, a college seminar conducted by guest scientists and bi-yearly conference-like meetings. Social and ethical aspects, as well as data privacy issues are actively addressed. Structural actions are implemented in order to advance the scientific autonomy of the young researchers.
