Graduate School of Systemic Neurosciences (GSN-LMU)
The Graduate School of Systemic Neurosciences (GSN-LMU) is an institution of the Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich (LMU). Under the umbrella of the Munich Center for Neurosciences Brain & Mind the GSN-LMU is the educational platform, preparing young researchers for the increasingly broad and complex field of neurosciences.
After the successful application in the first-round of Excellence Initiative funding by the DFG (German Research Council), the GSN-LMU started in November 2006. The first cohort was recruited early 2007.
The GSN-LMU greatly benefits from the exceptionally broad expertise concentrated in the neurosciences and related fields in and around Munich. The neuroscience community in Munich covers all aspects from theory and biophysics, via neurobiology and medicine to neurocognitive psychology and even philosophy.
The collaborating institutions are:
LMU Faculties:
Biology, Medicine, Psychology and Philosophy
Max-Planck-Institutions:
Neurobiology, Psychiatry and Ornithology
Helmholtz Center Munich:
Institute of Stem Cell Research and Institute of Neurogenetics
Bernstein Center for Computational Neurosciences Munich
Technical University Munich:
Man-Machine Communication, Bio-inspired Information Processing, Zoology and Theoretical Biophysics
In close collaboration with the master's program, supported by the Elitenetzwerk Bayern, we cover all aspects of graduate education leading from BSc to MSc and PhD. Exceptionally qualified students can join the fast-track program, taking them directly from a Bachelor's degree to a PhD.
The GSN-LMU is an interdisciplinary and independent institution of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich, governed by a scientific board which consists of researchers from all areas involved. Together they have defined novel study regulations equally applying to all young neuroscientist pursuing a PhD in the GSN, whether they come from biology, medicine, electrical engineering, physics or other related fields. Uniquely in Germany - the GSN-LMU independently awards the internationally accepted degree PhD. Our timely and internationally compatible education makes the GSN-LMU very attractive for students from all over the world.
