Studying at the Academy of Music Hanns Eisler Berlin

Study programmes

The Academy of Music Hanns Eisler plans to convert all its study programmes to Bachelor and Master degrees from the winter semester 2009/10. The diploma courses will be discontinued and replaced by Bachelor and Master programmes. From the beginning of the winter semester 2009/10 new students will only be able to register for these new study programmes.

Bachelor study programmes

The Academy of Music Hanns Eisler offers Bachelor programmes in the following subjects:
  • String instruments (violin, viola, cello, double bass)
  • Harp
  • Guitar
  • Brass instruments (horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba)
  • Percussion
  • Woodwind instruments (saxophone, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, flute)
  • Piano
  • Voice
  • Stage directing
  • Composition
  • Conducting (choral and orchestral)
  • Coaching/piano accompaniment
  • Historical and contemporary musical texture in theory and practice
  • Jazz (in the Jazz Institute Berlin)


The Bachelor study programmes are modularised and cover 4 years of study corresponding to 240 credit points. The curriculum design includes a balance of compulsory and elective modules, enabling students to emphasise certain aspects of their studies according to their individual career plans.

Master study programmes

Master study programmes are offered in the following subjects:
  • String instruments (violin, viola, cello, double bass)
  • Harp
  • Guitar
  • Brass instruments (horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba)
  • Percussion
  • Woodwind instruments (saxophone, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, flute)
  • Piano
  • Chamber music/Lied duo
  • Voice
  • Music theatre directing
  • Composition
  • Electroacoustic music
  • Conducting (choral, orchestral)
  • Coaching/piano accompaniment
  • Historical and contemporary musical texture in theory and practice
  • Jazz (in the Jazz Institute Berlin)
  • Jazz Education and Vocal Jazz Education (in the Jazz Institute Berlin)

All Master programmes run for 2 years, during which time 120 ECTS credit points must be obtained.

Concert Exam

In the process of introducing Bachelor and Master programmes, the "Hanns Eisler" has also restructured the study courses leading to the Concert Exam. The "Concert Exam" is offered as a 3rd phase of study to the cream of national and international young musicians and requires candidates to have completed a Master programme.
