Ways to join us

Requirements and Application Process

There are several ways becoming a member of GSISH:

The first way is to apply to a open position, posted on our website.

The second way to become a GSISH member lies in being already a doctoral canidate of one of our faculty members. GSISH faculty members can propose their doctoral candidates becoming a member of GSISH at the GSISH management.

The third way is to apply for becoming an associated member. All doctorates from our participating institutions (TUM, LMU, Helmholz) can apply. When you want to become a member without being a local doctorate, you have to find a professor first, who propose you becoming a member. (see step 2)

For all applications you need to prepare and submit the following documents to the school's managing director (exceptions may apply):

1. a detailed application letter stating your background and motivation for your particular interest in our course of study, including a short outline about your research goals (1 page)
2. a curriculum vitae (CV), 1-3 pages, including first and family name, date of birth, gender, nationality, and contact details. Also specify your educational and vocational background, examinations, publications, research and language skills.
3. proof of an adequate command of the English language (for non-native speakers only)
4. certified copy of the final degree result (e.g. Master's or Diploma certificate; above-average overall grades) and/or records of special scientific or vocational performance after graduation (publications, industrial research experience, etc.).
If the certificates are in any language other than German or English, we would additionally need a certified transcript in German or English.
If your grade system is different to the German grade system, we need a transcript which tells us the equivalent of your grades in German terms.
5. Two reference letters of former teachers / employers.

Applications are only accepted in electronic form (one PDF file) to gsish@tum.de.
