Modern equipment and expert instruction
Our facilities
The building structures of the Hochschule have been vastly extended. Since 2004, the HFM has used the former church St. Mauritius which now, after extensive modifications, serves as the stage "Mauritius-Studio" for rehearsals and performances of music theatre productions in particular. In addition, for educational studies, the former "Schiller Schule," across from our main building, has complemented us since 2007. Future plans call for adding a second level to our home central facility of the Hochschule.
In addition to our concert hall, which includes a large pipe organ by Klais Orgelbau, Bonn, we also teach and perform in the Stiftskirche and Schlosskirche. This concerns particularly the fields of church music, ancient music and organ performance.
Modern equipment
New media rooms, with state of the art modern equipment, offer all opportunities for digital sound and music processing under professional coaching. Studio 5 is the home of the department of Jazz and Popular Music - a room with an authentic club atmosphere that is well equipped with professional technology.
In cooperation with the Saarbrücken Max Planck-Institute, the HFM began an interesting project in summer 2008 in the research of "Music Information Retrieval"(MIR). Musicians, musicologists and computer scientists explore together how to analyze large digital musical data, considering different aspects.
Closely connected with regional partners
With respect to professional experiences, the HFM highly values close cooperation with other cultural institutions. There is a long-standing cooperation with the "Saarländischer Rundfunk" (Saarland Broadcasting Company), in particular to the Radio Symphonic Orchestra, the "Deutsche Radiophilharmonie." Within the formation "Netzwerk Musik Saar," which is especially engaged in contemporary music and interdisciplinary projects, the HFM plays a leading role. A long tradition of cooperation with the Saarland State Theatre in the fields of instrumental and voice education is to be noticed, as well.
Eminent presenter of music events
The rich offerings of concerts in the Hochschule are an integral part of the Saarland cultural scene. The soloists, ensembles and orchestras perform a broad repertoire from ancient music to jazz and pop, including contemporary music, in the concert halls of the HFM as well as on stages abroad. The Hochschule is therefore one of the most important presenters of musical events in the Saarland.
Our collection of musical instruments
Since October 2008, the Hochschule für Musik Saar has owned a large collection of musical instruments. The more than 1000 exhibits were donated by the music philosopher Prof. Dr. Bernd Eichler (Berlin). They include a great variety of instruments of all classic categories, such as idiophones, areophones and chordophones: percussion instruments, wood, brass, string and plucked instruments. The oldest instrument was created in the 18th century. In addition to the many precious and rare objects, a genuine saxophone of inventor Adolphe Sax is part of the collection. Many historical records, scores and musicological scripts as well as an original phonograph by Thomas Edison, complement this recent donation to the HFM.
The collection is an integral element of the educational program of the Hochschule and serves furthermore as a vivid medium for music didactics, in particular for school classes.
International cooperation
By establishing the transnational "Kooperation für Musik in der Großregion" (CMGR) an exemplary international cultural project has been realised with significant contribution of the HFM. Aside from close contacts to the near European neighbors, the Hochschule administers official cooperation with the Central Conservatory of Bejing, the Chung Ang-University of Seoul and the University of Rzeszów (Poland).
