Co-operations with opera houses, churches and the media industry
Opera Class
Romance, passion and power: the fascination of the opera is unbroken. Who doesn't enjoy being drawn into the sparkling world of musical theatre? For students at the Robert Schumann University, opera holds a very special charm: in the opera class they learn to work under authentic conditions. Since 1995 the university has succeeded in producing an opera every year, collaborating with the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf to do so.
Institute for Music and Media
The Robert Schumann University has been training sound and video engineers since 1949, first on its own, then in collaboration with the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences. The degree course combines technical and scientific knowledge with studies in music - unique in Germany. The "Institute for Music and Media", founded in 2004, also offers a Bachelor's degree course in "Music and Media". In addition to artistic training, it imparts competencies that are indispensable to a career in the media and music industry: the curriculum includes subjects such as Media Composition, Music Informatics, Artwork Design, Music Management and Media Dramaturgy.
Church Music
The profession of church musician has changed a lot. Teaching abilities are becoming increasingly important. That's why the networked modular structure of the Bachelor degree course "Church Music" aims to combine a high artistic qualification with practice-related teaching content. The Institute of Church Music has its own specialist library, a large number of teaching and rehearsal rooms with the appropriate instruments, and a student dormitory, and maintains close contact with the students' future employers, the expert panels of the Archbishopric of Cologne, the Bishopric of Essen and the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland.
Schumann junior
The Robert Schumann University wants to sponsor gifted students as early as possible, and has founded the "Schumann junior" training centre for this purpose. "Schumann junior" is aimed at students from the ages of 10 to 17 years. The university's goal is to form the young talents into artistic personalities; the training is therefore very broad. Students not only learn to play their own instrument; the timetable also includes lessons in "Music Theory" and "Music History". "Schumann junior" pupils also take part in the official concerts held by the university.
