Historic ambience
The Lübeck University of Music has a unique atmosphere. As part of the UNESCO cultural heritage, it is housed in 22 listed mercantile buildings in the historic city centre of Lübeck: a synthesis of historic architecture and a living musical culture. Since 2007, the elaborately restored Holstentor Hall, located directly opposite the famous landmark of Lübeck, the Holstentor (Holsten Gate), has provided additional practice and instruction facilities.
Largest concert promoter in the region
The Lübeck University of Music is the largest concert promoter in Schleswig-Holstein. During the semester, up to three events take place daily in the acoustically and architectually impressive concert halls. Class performances, examination concerts, opera performances, performances by lecturers, public readings, lectures and the nationally acclaimed Lübeck Brahms Festival arouse great public interest.
The University of Music operates nationwide in a network with other cultural promoters, thus enabling its students to also take part in performances beyond the city of Lübeck.
Johannes Brahms Collection - acclaimed throughout Europe
The Brahms Institute, which was founded at the University of Music in 1991, holds one of the most significant collections on Johannes Brahms and his era in Europe. The exhibits are continuously being extended and made available for scientific studies. In connection with the Lübeck University of Music a creative interaction is emerging between research and practical experience.
Lübeck Brahms Festival
Year after year, since1992, the Lübeck University of Music has demonstrated its high artistic level through its Brahms Festival. In the meantime, the festival has established itself as a festival week which ranks among the most important dedicated to Brahms in the whole of Germany, and is unique in the academic landscape. The renowned soloists of the University of Music give concerts together with the best students in their year, offering a fine selection of chamber music with thematic focuses around the works of Johannes Brahms which are varied each year.
Tradition of Sacred Music
Lübeck is the city of magnificent Gothic churches and precious historical organs. The great Baroque musician, Dieterich Buxtehude, lived and worked here.The International Buxtehude Organ Competition competition, which has been organised by the University of Music since 2007, is named in his honour. Lübeck offers organists superb practice and performance opportunities: the University of Music also possesses nine organs including a great concert organ by Marcussen and a French Mutin organ which are complemented by the historic organs in the churches of Lübeck.
